Access the Union Court Docket

Start with the paperwork you already have. The agency and court named on your notice tell you which Union court docket to search, since one Union address can lead to a town record, a Monroe County Magistrate matter, or a Circuit Court case. Union serves as the county seat, yet that does not fold every local filing into one system, and the town offers no public municipal docket portal online. Once you know the right court, run your docket search in the matching system and confirm any date or file with the clerk who keeps it. Courthouse fire recovery and renovation have also disrupted local counters, so check current office access before you go.

Union Is the County Seat

Union is Monroe County's seat and had 419 residents in the official 2020 Census place table. The Monroe County Courthouse and several court contacts use Union addresses, while town administration has its own PO Box and phone. That overlap can make an address look like a court classification when it is only a location. Record custody follows the government body and case type.

Circuit Clerk Daniel Tickle handles Circuit records. Magistrate Court Clerk Jeanne Gullette handles Magistrate documents. The County Clerk handles probate, deeds, and county-recording materials. Union's clerk or recorder is the starting point for a town record. Ask “which office maintains this exact case or citation?” before paying a fee or traveling to a counter.

The Union Municipal Court

Union's state-hosted pages publish town contacts, agencies, and elected-official information, but the inspected pages did not expose a municipal docket or court calendar. That absence does not establish that no municipal court or record exists. West Virginia Code §8-10-2 permits municipal court arrangements through charter or ordinance, so the town must confirm its current local structure.

The official contact page lists phone and fax 304-772-5522, PO Box 13, Union, WV 24983, and a town email. The agencies page listed city manager Pat Mustain and recorder Robert Pomphrey when inspected. Because officeholders may change, use the main town contact and ask for the current person responsible for municipal citations, inspection, and copies.

Union Clerk and Recorder Path

The official Union agencies page identifies the manager and recorder channel used for town administration. A useful request supplies the citation number, name, date range, issuing agency, and exact document wanted. Ask whether the matter is maintained by the town, Monroe Magistrate Court, or another custodian.

Confirm current fees, payment method, and office access before sending money. The research did not locate a Union municipal docket request form, fee sheet, or guaranteed public terminal. If the town redirects the request, record the new office and case number rather than repeating the same search in an unrelated database.

The official agencies page shows the local contact structure.

Union Court Dates and Settings

No searchable Union municipal hearing calendar was found. A town notice, Monroe County Commission calendar, and West Virginia Judiciary closure page serve different purposes and must not be presented as case calendars. MCRSearch event rows can show a setting for Magistrate Court, but old, continued, and closed events can remain in the record. Clerk confirmation controls before an appearance.

DateThe event date shown in the record, subject to a later reset or order.
TimeThe listed start time; confirm docket call versus individual hearing.
CourtroomThe stated room or location, which renovation or relocation may affect.
JudgeThe judicial officer linked to the event, not proof of final outcome.
Setting TypeThe event label, such as pretrial, bond, trial, continued, or closed.

Union Calendars Are Separate

A County Commission meeting at or near the courthouse is not a Circuit or Magistrate hearing. A town calendar is not proof of a municipal case setting. The Judiciary closure tool reports operating status, not every Union case. Use a filed notice or portal event to identify a possible date, then ask the clerk whether it remains active.

Keep the event type with the date. “Hearing Continued” means another setting may control. “Hearing/Event Closed” may close that event without resolving the entire case. “Reason Closed” is also distinct from the case disposition. Ask about the present room, time, judge, and any remote-participation instruction.

Union Traffic Tickets

Union's official Emergency Services page says the town has no municipal police department and that the Monroe County Sheriff and West Virginia State Police provide enforcement. The agency field on a citation may therefore name a county or state agency rather than “Union Police.” That clue can point toward Magistrate Court, though the printed court and case identifier still control.

For a state citation, MCRSearch supplies case information and the Magistrate fines-and-fees system accepts exact citation, case, or payment-plan identifiers. Required dashes matter. Neither system is a substitute for the town contact when the citation is municipal. Follow the response date on the paper and see Monroe County traffic court records for the county route.

Union Has No Town Police

The lack of a Union police department does not mean there are no traffic or criminal records tied to Union. It changes the likely originating agency. Sheriff or State Police enforcement can create a Monroe Magistrate case even when the event occurred inside town. Search by the official case number and agency instead of assuming a city-named docket.

If MCRSearch finds the matter, use the event list for case location, charge, plea, disposition, settings, and judge. A charge is not a conviction. A plea is not the final result. For the complaint, order, judgment, or other document, contact Magistrate Court Clerk Jeanne Gullette at 304-772-3321.

Record the agency exactly as displayed. The agency identifies who originated the matter, while case location identifies the court location and the disposition magistrate identifies the officer tied to the result. Those fields answer different questions. If a sheriff or State Police citation cannot be found, give the clerk the citation date and identifier rather than searching for a nonexistent Union police agency.

Where Union Cases End Up

Town ordinance or municipal citation records begin with Union's custodian. State misdemeanors, warrants, preliminary felony matters, and Magistrate civil cases use Monroe Magistrate Court. Felony cases after transfer, Circuit civil cases, and appeals use Circuit Court. County-recording and probate files remain with the County Clerk even though that office is also in Union.

Docket flow: Union municipal record › Monroe Magistrate Court › Circuit Court

A municipal sentence can be appealed to Circuit Court under West Virginia Code §8-34-1. The appeal has its own Circuit record and may require another case number. Search WVPASS for that stage and use the Monroe County court docket page for the countywide routing steps.

Union Courthouse Address Changes

Current county sources identify the Monroe County Courthouse as PO Box 350, 350 Main Street, Union, WV 24983. An older general state portal lists 216 Main Street and an older phone. Current county and Judiciary pages should control. The Magistrate Court Clerk has a separate address at 500 Main Street, PO Box 4, which further shows why “the Union courthouse” is not a precise record request.

Use 304-772-3096 ext. 4 for the Circuit Clerk and 304-772-3321 for the Magistrate Court Clerk. Ask whether the desired counter is operating at its normal site. The County Clerk, Circuit Clerk, and Magistrate Clerk have different custody, even when their addresses all contain Union.

The Circuit Clerk's scope includes Circuit pleadings, orders, judgments, criminal and civil files, appeals, and assigned Family Court filing channels. Magistrate records can include lower-court civil and criminal case information plus the documents that MCRSearch does not display. The County Clerk's recorded deeds, mortgages, wills, and probate files may relate to a dispute but do not become Circuit docket records for that reason. Giving the office name with the address prevents a request from landing at the wrong counter.

For a mailed request, include a return address, telephone number, case number, parties, event or document name, date range, and delivery preference. Ask for a quote before sending payment because certification, postage, and the type of record can affect the total. No Monroe court-specific mail request form or guaranteed renovation-era counter schedule was found. A phone check is therefore part of the records process, not merely a convenience.

Union Fire Changed Access

An official county notice says an early January 2025 courthouse fire forced temporary office moves. Circuit Clerk services went to the lower Family Court area of the Union Fire Department on Green Hill Road. Other county offices moved elsewhere, the Record Room closed, and some services were unavailable. Later Commission records describe renovation and security planning.

No complete final reopening notice for every service was located in the research. Call before visiting, especially for books, certified copies, or a public terminal. The state-hosted Union page provides town context:

Union court docket official town information page

The town page helps identify Union, but current court access must be confirmed with the relevant clerk.

Union's courthouse history adds another reason to separate a building from the records operations inside it. Official historic-district material traces the courthouse and jail site to land given in 1799. The present brick Romanesque courthouse dates to about 1881 to 1882 and is described as the third courthouse on the site. That history is useful local context, but a historic image or address cannot establish which temporary office now holds a file.

When planning an in-person search, ask whether the record room, public terminal, copy service, and certification desk are all available. A clerk may be able to confirm a case while an older book or physical file remains inaccessible. If the counter cannot supply the item that day, ask whether WVPASS provides a public document, whether a later appointment is required, or whether a written request can be queued. Keep any deadline separate from the expected copy time.

Public Access to Union Court Records

West Virginia policy favors access to information about official government acts, subject to exemptions and court rules. It does not require each Union document to be placed online. A request should identify the office, court, names, case or citation number, date range, exact document, desired format, and whether certification is required. If access is denied, ask for the statute, rule, or order that applies.

Key Rules:

West Virginia Freedom of Information Act - policy favors full information on government affairs and official acts, subject to exemptions.

West Virginia Code § 53-8-17 - defines court records for sealing and provides a judicial good-cause process.

West Virginia Code § 49-5-101 - makes juvenile records generally confidential, with statutory exceptions.
