Traffic Court Records in Monroe County
Citations written by the Monroe County Sheriff, West Virginia State Police, or Division of Natural Resources officers generally head to Magistrate Court. The official Monroe County Magistrate page names those citation sources. It also posts local directions for pleas and payment. A ticket from town police may be a municipal case instead. Alderson offers a citation-payment category on its site. Peterstown and Union post no public citation docket.
The agency on the ticket does not settle everything by itself. Read the court name, county, and response instructions printed right on the citation. Then check those details. Match them against the public Magistrate search, the state payment portal, or the town clerk. The court record can hold the charge, the plea, and more. Settings, continuances, judgment, dismissal, and payment events all appear there.
Monroe Citations Start With Custody
A Monroe mailing address does not mean the town holds the file. Union says plainly that it has no municipal police force. It relies on the Sheriff and State Police for enforcement. Alderson sits in both Monroe and Greenbrier Counties. The town name alone is a poor county filter. Peterstown posts clerk and recorder contacts but no public municipal case portal.
Let the ticket's caption lead the way. "Magistrate Court of Monroe County" points to the Magistrate Clerk. A town court label points to the municipal office that keeps those records. If neither is clear, call. Have the citation number, issue date, name, and agency in hand. This quick custody check keeps a payment from going to the wrong channel. It also leads to the real court docket.
How to Look Up a Traffic Ticket
The Magistrate Fines and Fees portal takes an exact ID for payment, not a full docket search. Pick one search type only. Type every dash and digit exactly as printed. When searching by citation ID, set the citation-county control to Monroe.
- Read the court and issuing agency on the citation.
- Choose Citation ID, Case ID, or Payment Plan ID.
- Enter the identifier exactly, including all dashes.
- Review the returned payment information without treating it as a disposition.
- Run MCRSearch for public Magistrate case details.
- Call the Magistrate Clerk or municipal custodian to confirm the setting and file.
| Search choice | Exact format | Other control |
|---|---|---|
| Citation ID Number | ######### | Citation County dropdown |
| Case ID Number | ##-M##X-##### or M##M-########## | Exact match |
| Payment Plan ID | MC##-##### | Exact match |
Monroe Payment Search Is Not a Docket
The payment result does narrow work. It can confirm an amount and accept payment on the exact record. It cannot establish the final disposition. Nor can it show judgment terms, current license status, or certified proof of a court event. Check it against MCRSearch and the clerk. Do that before treating it as the whole story. The official portal shows the three mutually exclusive ID choices.

The portal runs on exact matches only. Treat it as a payment tool, not a complete Monroe County traffic case file.
Finding Your Traffic Court Date
Confirm any traffic setting from the court record, and with the clerk when time is tight. MCRSearch can display Magistrate case events, but public results are capped and the document list does not include the underlying papers. Monroe County publishes no full public daily court calendar.
| Date | The filed hearing or response date; confirm later changes. |
|---|---|
| Time | The listed appearance time, which may be a docket call. |
| Court | Magistrate or the named municipal court holding the file. |
| Location | The current counter or courtroom, subject to verified office status. |
| Setting Type | Plea, pretrial, trial, compliance, payment, or another stated event. |
| Status | Open, continued, disposed, or another portal label. |
A county meeting calendar and the Judiciary court-closure page are not substitutes for the case setting. They explain an office closure. Only the case docket and the clerk can confirm when that citation must be addressed.
What If Monroe Search Finds Nothing
Check every digit and dash first. The MFP portal needs an exact match. A broad MCRSearch query can hit its 30-result cap. A newly filed record may take time to appear. Narrow the date or case identifier. Then ask the clerk to search the citation itself.
Test custody next. A municipal citation may never surface in the state Magistrate payment route. Alderson, Peterstown, and Union each use a local contact channel for town records. A missing public result can reflect sealing, a restricted case, or a transfer. It does not mean the ticket vanished or the response date moved.
Paying or Contesting a Ticket
The Monroe Magistrate page describes a no-contest plea by phone. It also lists locally stated in-person routes for not-guilty or guilty pleas. Payment options include online or in-person card. In-person cash works too, and check or money order can be paid in person or by mail. Procedures change. Confirm the accepted plea method before relying on any of it.
| Choice | What it does | Record to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Pay or plead as allowed | Resolves the citation only under the court's stated procedure | Receipt, plea record, and judgment |
| Contest | Preserves the request for a hearing under the court's process | Filed plea and confirmed setting |
| Request a plan | Uses the Magistrate Clerk's verification and plan channel | Plan ID and payment history |
| Seek municipal routing | Asks the town custodian which court holds the citation | Case number and clerk instructions |
Do not ignore the response date. West Virginia Code §50-3-2A addresses Magistrate nonresponse or failure to appear and related suspension consequences. Code §17B-3-3a directs DMV action after court notice under its terms. Contact the court promptly if a setting was missed.
Monroe Municipal Traffic Routes
State law lets a municipality create a municipal court by charter or ordinance. It also offers a Circuit Court appeal route for municipal sentences. Those statutes do not mean every Monroe town runs the same court schedule. Plea options can differ too.
Alderson Town Hall sits at 311 Monroe Street South. It answers at 304-445-2916. Its payment page lists a "Pay Citations" category but offers no online citation-search fields. Peterstown's town office at 229 Thomas Street uses 304-753-9509. Union's official contact is 304-772-5522. Ask each town's record keeper whether the matter is municipal, Magistrate, transferred, or appealed.
Court Traffic Record vs Driver Record
Two files, two offices. The traffic court record belongs to the court clerk, and it can show the citation, plea, hearings, orders, disposition, payment events, and public filed papers. The driver record belongs to the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles and reflects the licensing agency's own data.
| File | Custodian | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic court case record | Magistrate Clerk or municipal clerk | Shows what occurred in the citation case |
| Driver record | West Virginia DMV | Shows the licensing agency's record |
Know which paper you actually need. A receipt from the court proves payment, but it is not a certified disposition, and a driver record is not the court docket. So ask for the exact court item, whether that is a dismissal order, judgment, continuance, payment receipt, or certified copy.
Monroe Traffic Forms and E-File
Monroe traffic forms start with the state Judiciary. It maintains a forms index with current citation motion materials. Pull the current forms page each time instead of relying on an old saved PDF. CourtPLUS/E-File is a separate thing entirely. That platform handles registered filing and service, not anonymous public traffic lookup. The registered-user boundary is plain at the CourtPLUS sign-on.

That boundary matters for anyone chasing a public citation. Use MCRSearch, MFP, or a call to the clerk instead of trying to enter the filing platform. The Judiciary's E-File overview describes what the system does: filing and service for registered users.

Monroe joined the system in 2015. Going live that year did not turn every traffic record into a public download.
Fees and Copies
Watch what the $2 WV.gov fee actually covers. The online payment portal states that its price includes a $2 per-payment WV.gov fee, and that charge belongs to the payment service alone. It is separate from what the clerk charges for a paper copy, certified order, or any other record.
| Item | Amount or route |
|---|---|
| MFP online payment service | $2 per payment included in the displayed price |
| Public MCRSearch lookup | Free search; documents require clerk contact |
| Magistrate legal copy | Nominal fee stated generally; exact Monroe amount not located |
| Certified traffic order | Ask the court clerk for the current total |
| Mail delivery | Confirm postage and accepted payment method |
Before you order anything, have your details ready. State the citation or case ID, the issuing court, the event date, the document title, the copy count, and whether you need certification. The Monroe County court records process explains why a portal download and a clerk-certified paper are not the same thing.
Monroe Alternative Disposition Limits
West Virginia Code §8-11-5 lets a municipality create a prejudgment alternative disposition for traffic offenses. Under the statute, a conviction can be withheld for up to 180 days. The driver completes required conditions in that period, such as a driver-safety course. That is legal authority only. It does not prove that Alderson, Peterstown, or Union currently offers the option. Ask the municipal clerk about the town's ordinance and eligibility before choosing a plea. Monroe posts no photo-enforcement portal or county traffic calendar. When exact-ID tools fail on a Monroe traffic docket. The Magistrate Clerk or the named municipal office is the sound fallback.
Current Monroe Traffic Forms
Forms are sorted by court, topic, category, and language. Those Judiciary filters help you find a current citation motion without guessing at old file names. The official forms index shows the search controls. One caution: the form itself never shows whether the court granted the request. The filed motion and the resulting order still live in the Monroe traffic court record.
