Search Monroe County Court Docket

A Monroe County court docket is the court's running list of filings, events, settings, and results. To search the Monroe County court docket, first identify whether the matter belongs to Magistrate, Circuit, Family, or a municipal court. West Virginia offers separate public systems for Magistrate and Circuit cases, while clerks supply papers, certified copies, and records that do not appear online. A Monroe County docket search can also lead to a regional family office or a town clerk. The right route depends on the court, case type, and stage of the case.

Monroe County MCRSearch Fields

MCRSearch is the free statewide Magistrate Case Record Search. It sits behind a CAPTCHA gate. From there you can search by first name, last name, or case number. Results stop at 30 records. Because of that cap, a case number or a tight full-name query works better than a broad surname sweep. A case record can list the location, agency, charge, plea, disposition, and the magistrate tied to the disposition.

The event area adds record number and event type. It also lists date and time, room, location, judge, and reason closed. What it never does is put filed papers online. The Judiciary search instructions send users to the clerk for documents. Treat every result as a lead toward the official file rather than a certified copy.

What a Court Docket Shows

A Monroe County court docket tracks activity, not every word in the file. It can name the case, the parties, the charge or case class, scheduled events, filed motions, orders, and the disposition. Keep the limits in mind. A charge is an accusation, nothing more. A plea is not the result. A closed hearing is not the case disposition either.

The complaint, motion, exhibit, order, or transcript may hold facts the docket line skips. For Circuit matters, WVPASS offers paid public document downloads. MCRSearch provides no Magistrate documents. Need an authenticated record? Get a clerk-certified copy.

Case numberThe court-assigned key used for portal and clerk searches.
Case locationThe court or county tied to the case, not always a mailing address.
Event and dateA hearing, filing, or court action and its recorded time.
Room and judgeSetting details that may change through a later order.
Plea and dispositionSeparate fields showing response and recorded outcome.

Monroe County WVPASS Access

WVPASS is West Virginia's public Circuit Court search. Registration comes first. Browsing public case details is then free. Viewing or downloading a document costs 25 cents per page plus the stated card charge. Public Circuit coverage generally begins July 1, 1999, according to the official FAQ. Anything older in Monroe County may still need a clerk search.

Sessions have rules too. The system permits one active session, uses a five-minute two-factor code, and times out after 60 minutes. Purchased documents stay in Purchase History for 30 days. Downloads are not certified. Bulk downloads are barred, and a public case label does not make each filing public. Check the court, the number, and the date before you pay.

Which Courts Keep Dockets

Magistrate Court takes misdemeanors, warrants, and bail. It also handles preliminary felony work, state citations, protective matters, and civil claims within its jurisdiction. Circuit Court is the general trial court. It handles the higher civil and criminal work, felonies after transfer or indictment, and Magistrate appeals. Monroe shares the Thirtieth Judicial Circuit with Summers County. Family Court covers Monroe and Greenbrier as the Fifteenth Family Court Circuit. Municipal records start with the town. Federal cases use the Southern District of West Virginia and PACER.

Deeds are not court records. Probate, deeds, mortgages, wills, and County Commission material belong with the County Clerk. That office is not the Circuit Clerk.

Finding Court Dates and Settings

A setting row can carry the event type, date and time, room, location, judge, and reason closed. Read the later entries too. "Hearing Continued" means the old date may no longer control. "Hearing/Event Closed" only describes that one event. It says nothing about the final case outcome. Monroe County posts no single public Circuit and Magistrate calendar. Use MCRSearch events for Magistrate matters and WVPASS for Circuit matters. Then confirm the active date with the clerk. The Judiciary closure page shows court status, not case settings. The county calendar lists meetings, not hearings. See the Monroe County court calendar for the full process.

Monroe County Circuit Terms

Trial Court Rule 2.30 sets Monroe Circuit Court terms on the second Tuesday in January and September and the third Tuesday in May. A term date marks the court's formal cycle. It is not a hearing date for every pending case. Summers County sits in the same circuit. Yet its term dates differ. Family hearings may point to Lewisburg. Municipal and federal dates fall outside this state calendar. Trust the hearing notice and the newest docket event for the specific matter.

Public Access to Dockets

West Virginia favors public access to government information. That policy still does not put every court file online. Trial Court Rules 10.03, 10.04, and 15A govern inspection limits, access, private information, and sealed filings. A public index can sit beside a sealed or redacted paper. Juvenile records are generally confidential. Protective filings may hold safety-sensitive addresses. A missing result proves nothing either way. Never infer that a person has, or lacks, a protected case from one empty search.

Key access rules:

West Virginia Code §29B-1-1 favors access to government information, subject to exemptions.

West Virginia Code §53-8-17 defines court records and provides a sealing process.

West Virginia Code §49-5-101 makes juvenile records generally confidential.

Monroe County Transfer Entries

A Monroe County felony often starts in Magistrate Court. It opens with a complaint, a first appearance, a bond decision, and a preliminary hearing. Watch for an MCRSearch event reading "Transfer to Circuit Ct" or "Bond Transferred to Circuit Court." That is the sign the case's next stage may sit in WVPASS. Search both systems with the party name and original number, but expect a separate Circuit identifier to exist. One caution: a transfer entry is neither a conviction nor a dismissal. The Magistrate Clerk can tell you the receiving court. The Circuit Clerk can pull up the later filing.

Docket path: Magistrate filing › preliminary event › transfer or appeal › Circuit filing › later settings and orders

The Clerk and Docket Records

Know what you are asking the clerk for. A docket entry is just the event list. The document holds the full filed text. A certified record is the clerk's authentication of it. State law sets some copy charges, though postage, certification, and special service costs are worth confirming before you order. For mail requests, send your contact details, the court, the case number if you have it, the parties or agency, the filing or event, the date range, and whether you want plain or certified copies. Monroe County does not publish a court-record request form. If your case lives in an old book, or renovations have shifted an office, call ahead first.

Monroe County Access After Fire

A fire changed how Monroe County courthouse business gets done. The county's January 2025 notice said offices had to move to temporary sites. Circuit Clerk service relocated to the lower Family Court area of Union Fire Department. The Record Room was closed at that time. Not every service was available. The notice asked visitors to call. Commission records show renovation, insurance, and security work continuing through a February 2026 special session. A final reopening notice has not been posted. The county home page is the current starting point for courthouse status:

The county's own pages route you to local offices, while state portals remain the tools for a Monroe County docket search. The official contact page publishes current Union hours and phone channels:

Monroe County Court Technology

Monroe County has added court technology in waves. Circuit and Family E-File arrived on May 1, 2015, but it serves registered filers rather than anonymous public searches. Statewide CourtPLUS and E-File completion followed in July 2024. Free Magistrate search launched in January 2024. WVPASS Circuit access came online in March 2025. In July 2026 the Judiciary announced CourtOne and a transition to an active-case dashboard. That dashboard is not a historical document archive. These layers explain why one Monroe County court docket search can cross paper files, a public index, and a paid document viewer.

The distinction matters when a search looks incomplete. An electronic filing system lets authorized users file and serve papers; it does not promise the same papers are open through a public search. A public docket may list an order, yet access to that order can still turn on its classification, a page charge, or a clerk request. Older Circuit material can predate the WVPASS coverage boundary. Note which system produced each result rather than treating all online court information as one database.

County systems add yet another layer. Monroe's Online Document Inquiry searches recorded instruments by last name and optional first name. A blue image icon means a scan exists. A missing icon does not prove the paper record is gone. Deeds, releases, powers of attorney, fiduciary papers, and similar records each carry their own index date ranges. Even when a deed or estate record relates to a lawsuit, that county recording tool cannot replace MCRSearch or WVPASS.

Court Dockets by City in Monroe County

The 2020 Census table counts three incorporated places in Monroe County. Alderson straddles Monroe and Greenbrier. Peterstown and Union keep their own town contacts. None of the towns exposes a full municipal docket portal, so a town clerk or recorder is the custody check for local court records. A payment page or meeting agenda is not a case docket. Alderson offers a citation-payment category. Peterstown lists government contacts. Union reports no municipal police department, so an agency field in a Monroe County criminal docket may name the county Sheriff or State Police instead.

Alderson Court Docket

2020 population 975. Town records may require county-line routing.

Peterstown Court Docket

2020 population 448. Ask which court keeps the citation.

Union Court Docket

2020 population 419. Town and county contacts are distinct.

Picking the right court makes or breaks a Monroe County docket search. A name found in MCRSearch points to a Magistrate case, while WVPASS covers public Circuit cases. Municipal records begin with Alderson, Peterstown, or Union officials, and federal cases run through PACER. Suppose an online result is absent. Write down the court, party name, date range, and event sought. Then call the proper clerk. Keep that short record of your search. It helps staff tell a missing scan from an older file, a sealed matter, or a case held by another court. Ask for a plain copy when certification is not needed. Request a certified copy only when an official, clerk-authenticated record is required.

Map and Directions to the Monroe County Courthouse

Monroe Circuit Court files are kept at the Monroe County Courthouse, 350 Main Street, in downtown Union, the county seat. Magistrate Court sits in a separate building nearby at 500 Main Street. A January 2025 courthouse fire forced Circuit Clerk operations into the lower-level Family Court area of the Union Fire Department on Green Hill Road while the building underwent renovation and security upgrades; no official notice confirming a full return to 350 Main Street was located, so call ahead to confirm the clerk's current counter before a trip.
